The figure compass

Every woman is unique, and this is reflected in her body shape. There is no "right" or "wrong" figure - rather, it is our individual differences that make us special.

While many women pursue certain ideals through fashion or the media, it is important to know and appreciate your own body shape. This is the only way to emphasize your strengths and feel comfortable in your own skin. In this article, we take a closer look at the six different body shapes that are often used as a guide. Find out which type suits you best and how you can show it off to its best advantage!

1. The pear shape: This is characterized by a narrower upper body and wider hips and thighs - similar to the shape of a pear. Tops for this figure are often at least one size smaller than pants or skirts.
Style tips:
  • Tops: Choose loose-fitting tops or those with eye-catching patterns, collars or V-necks. These draw the focus to the upper body and balance the proportions.
  • Bottoms: Go for plain, understated pants or skirts. A-line skirts and straight-cut pants are particularly flattering for this figure.

2. The V-contour (inverted triangle): This contour is dominated by broad shoulders, while the hips are narrower. Tops such as blouses and sweaters are often bought one size larger than the bottoms.
Style tips:
  • Tops: V-necks or deep necklines make the shoulders appear narrower. Choose tops with subtle shoulder details.
  • Bottoms: Light, patterned and wide trousers or skirts create balance by emphasizing the lower body.

3. The rectangular contour: This describes an almost even distribution of the upper and lower body without a pronounced waist. The overall body shape appears straight and sporty.
Style tips:
  • Cuts: Use straight, clear lines and simple cuts to emphasize the natural style. To create more curves, you can experiment with waist belts or wrap dresses.
  • Accessories: Large belt buckles or waist belts give your figure shape and structure.

4. The hourglass contour: The coveted hourglass figure is characterized by a narrow waist and harmonious proportions between shoulders and hips. This shape allows you to wear almost any style.
Style tips:
  • Focus on the waist: Tight-fitting clothing, tailored cuts and belts emphasize the narrow middle. Wrap dresses, pencil skirts or figure-hugging tops are your best friends.
  • Fabrics: Go for soft, flowing fabrics that hug the body and emphasize your curves.

5. The diamond contour: With the diamond figure, the waist is wider than the hips and shoulders, and the upper body appears fuller overall. This figure is best emphasized with loose-fitting and slim-cut clothing.
  • Style tips: Tops: Choose figure-flattering, loose-fitting tops in darker colors that visually lengthen the upper body.
  • Bottoms: Tight-fitting skirts or pants in lighter colors create balance and draw attention to the legs and hips.
  • Combinations: Wrap dresses, slim-fitting pants, straight skirts as well as long blazers and capes are ideal for experimenting with different looks.

 6. The apple shape: The apple shape shows a wider midsection with slimmer legs and arms. The focus here is on minimizing the waist and emphasizing the legs or cleavage.
 Style tips:
  • Tops: Choose loose-fitting tops that conceal the midsection. V-necks draw attention to the cleavage and lengthen the upper body.
  • Bottoms: Tight-fitting pants or skirts emphasize your slim legs and create balance.
  • Dresses: Empire cuts or wrap dresses are perfect for creating a waist and lengthening the upper body

Nevertheless: your body, your style. No matter what body shape you have, the right clothes can accentuate your best features and give you a feeling of self-confidence. The key is to understand your individual proportions and to work specifically with cuts, colors and accessories. Experiment with different styles and find out what suits you best. Because as we have already learned about the connection between fashion and self-confidence - at the end of the day, only one thing counts: that you feel comfortable and strong in your outfit!
