BAMIN BASICS Calico Jack Cardigan
The late 17th and early 18th centuries were the golden era of pirates. They took great risks and took extreme actions. The sun wasn’t always shiny and the waves were not always calm. In their wooden ships, they faced thunderstorms, freezing cold, enemy attacks and sailed to see the horizon behind the fog. During those long nights, the sweaters and cardigans woven by their wives kept the young sailors and pirates warm and close to the hearts of the beloved.
John Rackam, aka Calico Jack, is one of the most well-known pirates of all time. Along with two female pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, Rackam sailed off to tropical waters to venture. Anne had left her husband to be one of the only two female pirates ever to roam Caribbean waters. The Calico Jack Cardigan, handwoven from angora wool in pink and off-white tones, reflects the colorful personality of the famous pirate.
